The softball team completed its 2003 season with a pair of losses to
Salem State College Tuesday afternoon. The team had just come off a
season high four-game winning streak before traveling to Salem for a
doubleheader.

The Lady Rams were at home for all four of their wins, and the offense
was as productive as the pitching was in each victory. Last Thursday, the
Rams bats caught fire and unleashed a 15-hit, 15-run pounding on the
girls from Newbury College. The bottom of the order did most of the
damage, with DelVecchio, Volner and Mazzone contributing eight RBIs
among the three of them. Mary Mathews went three for three with three
runs and five RBIs for the winners.

The Lady Rams picked a fine time to get their offense going, as Newbury College was winless entering the game, and that did not change as they were held to one run on just four hits. With the loss, Newbury College fell to 0-13 on the year.

FSC took to the field in game two and showed no remorse with a
nine-run first inning, followed by a five-run second and another nine spot
in the third. Before the end of the third inning, the game was called and
the Lady Rams had taken two the easy way by a combined score of 39-1.

Newbury College received a first class thrashing at the hands of FSC, and with the sweep the Lady Rams prepared for Massachusetts Maritime
Academy.

Last Saturday proved to be a great day for softball, and the Rams did the job once again by sweeping Mass. Maritime by scores of 6-2 and 7-1.
Game one featured another solid pitching performance from staff ace
Jenn Mazzone. Mazzone went seven innings, tossing four-hit ball, while
fanning five. The win put the FSC sophomore at 10-9 on the year.
Mazzone helped her own cause by going 2 for 3 with two runs and a RBI.

Mass. Maritime cringed when Mazzone went to the hill in the second
game. She dominated for another seven innings, which saw the FSC
hurler whiff five more, while holding the opponent to one run. The 7-1 win
gave the Rams their first four-game winning streak of the year, albeit
against two weaker opponents (Newbury College and Mass. Maritime had
a combined 4-30 record.)

The home cooking proved to be very nice for the Rams, and they packed their bags feeling good before hitting the road for a match-up with Salem State. The last two games of the regular season saw the Rams drop both games by scores of 3-1 and 4-2. FSC played each game with a will to win, but with a combined 6 errors in two games, the outcomes went in favor of Salem State.

The Lady Rams finished the year at 12-19, 5-9 in MASCAC play. They now look toward the 2004 season as a year that they take the next step, and advance to the MASCAC tournament.

Statistically, the team batted a solid .284 on the year. Opponents hit .302 against FSC.
