- Candidates for
SGA president and student activities treasurer spoke
at an open meeting on April 10, 2008.
- Uncontested
nominees for student trustee and SGA vice president
were not required to attend.
- The two
candidates for president – junior Steve Whittemore
and senior Billy Robertson – gave prepared speeches
explaining their qualifications, backgrounds and
goals.
- Whittemore, a
biology major with a concentration in pre-med, has
been an SGA member for three years and is an e-board
representative for the class of 2009. He is from
East Bridgewater and is the oldest of five boys.
Whittemore joked that he knows how to deal with
people of all ages because of his family experience.
- The main thrust
of Whittemore’s speech was the idea of community.
“Community service is something I have always taken
part in and I feel that it is essential to be a
successful individual in today’s community.” He also
referenced President Timothy Flanagan, whom
Whittemore says has also pushed the idea of an FSC
community. Whittemore’s own community involvement
includes coaching a little league team of 14-15 year
olds and teaching CCD at his parish. (continued)

- Early Saturday
morning, the campus was flooded with hundreds of new
faces, as Accepted Students’ Day made one final pitch to
throngs of prospective students to join the FSC
community.
- Activities for
Accepted Students’ Day took place Saturday, April 5 at
FSC. The second segment of this year’s program will
occur Saturday, April 12.
- The prospective
students had the opportunity to tour the campus and meet
the faculty.
- Dr. Susanne Conley,
vice president of enrollment management and student
development, said, “It really is for prospective
students and their parents to get a better sense of the
campus - for students to meet faculty in the majors
they’ve indicated interest in. I think part of it is
celebratory. We’re congratulating people for their
admission. We are encouraging them to join the
community.”
- The Accepted
Students’ Day was modified from previous years. There
are now two separate days devoted to different academic
departments. Conley said this makes the campus a little
less crowded.
- Conley said FSC had
4,099 applications for the fall semester. Of those
applicants, 2,017 were accepted. Six hundred and
sixty-nine people attended the April 5 events and 533
people will be attending the April 12 events.
- Dr. Melinda Stoops, dean of
students, said, “It’s an opportunity for people who
maybe aren’t sure where they’re going … [and] for us to
show off the campus, show off the community and show
them what we have to offer. And hopefully, help them
decide to come here.” (continued)
